Fixing Diablo 3 Installation Problem in PC

The steps below are resolutions to installation issues with Diablo III. They are ordered from the most common at the top, to the less frequently needed at the bottom.

Note: If you are receiving a specific error when attempting to install Diablo III (example: BLZPTS00007), follow the support article for that specific error before trying these more general steps. Also, if you participated in the Diablo III beta, please make sure to uninstall the beta client before installing the retail version.

Install From an Administrator Account
Be sure you are logged on an administrator account when installing the game. If the game is not installed on an administrator account, computer permissions can prevent the installation from completing. Also, we cannot support the game on a non-administrator account.

To find out which user accounts are marked as Administrator accounts, follow these instructions:

Click Start > Control Panel and look for an icon called User Accounts. Double-click the icon and it will bring up a list of users on your computer. Find the user account that matches your user name and have a look in the group column; it may say administrator, power user, or user. If it says "administrator" then you should be fine.

Run the Diablo III Installer in Administrator Mode (Windows Vista, 7)
In addition to being logged on an Administrative account, you may also need to run the installer with the Run as Administrator command.

- For the digital version of Diablo III, right-click the Diablo III installer icon and select Run as administrator.
- For the DVD version, click Start and Computer, then right-click the DVD and choose Open. Right-click on the Installer listed as "application" and select Run as Administrator.

Battle.net Update Agent (Agent.exe) Issues
Issues with the Agent helper program may prevent Diablo III from installing or updating properly. If you notice your installation hanging, or if you receive errors specific to Agent, try the following steps:

1. Stop the installation process if it’s still running.
2. Wait for at least one minute. Ensure that Agent.exe no longer appears in the Processes tab of your Task Manager.
3. Restart the installation.

If that does not resolve the issue, delete the C:\ProgramData\Battle.net folder and try the installation again. The launcher will automatically rebuild this folder. If you cannot locate this folder, try these steps:

1. Click Start

2. Click Control Panel
3. If you are in Classic View: Select Folder Options > Click the View tab > In Advanced Settings under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives. > Click OK.
 4. If you are in Category View: Select Appearance and Personalization > In the Folder Options section, select Show hidden files and folders. This will bring up the Folder Options window. > Click on the View tab.

In the Advanced Settings section under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives. > Click OK.
5. Try again to navigate to the proper folder:

Windows Vista/7: C:\ProgramData\Battle.net

Windows XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
6. Delete the folder, then reattempt the installation.

Note: If you've pre-downloaded the digital version of the game in German or English before 10:00 AM CEST (9:00 AM GMT) on Saturday May 12, you must obtain the new downloaders to be able to install properly once the game is released on May 15:

1. Obtain the new Diablo III digital downloader using the links below
2. Point the download save at the same directory as before. The folder in question is your main game data folder. If you have the game downloaded to D:\Games\Diablo-III-8370-enGB-Installer, please point the download to D:\Games\. Do not use the automatically generated folder containing the installation files (i.e. do not use the directory D:\Games\Diablo-III-8370-enGB-Installer as this is the one created by the downloader).
3. If you chose the correct directory only 50MB will need to be downloaded to fix your install, otherwise you'll re-download the entire ~7.6GB

Eliminate Security Program Interference
Anti-virus and firewall programs (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm) are designed to protect your computer from perceived threats. Unfortunately, many security programs are not game-friendly and will frequently perceive a game installation or update as a threat and shut it down.

Disabling or temporarily uninstalling these programs will often permit the Diablo III installation to complete successfully. However, be advised that some security programs will continue to partially run even when disabled.

If you are uncomfortable troubleshooting your security programs yourself, contact technical support for the security program.

Shut Down Background Applications
The other programs running on your computer could be interfering with Diablo III's installation. We recommended running in Selective Startup mode when attempting installation, since background applications can interfere significantly with these operations. You can find more information and detailed instructions for this mode on the Closing Background Applications page.

Check Your Diablo III DVD for Damage
Examine the underside of your game DVD for any smudges, scratches, or cracks that might be preventing your computer from properly reading the disc. If your disc is too damaged to work, you can download the game instead.

Fix Hard Drive Errors and Fragmentation
A few bad sectors on your hard drive or a high amount of data fragmentation can result in installation issues. To fix these, follow the instructions on our Running Scandisk and Defrag page.

Scan Your Memory for Subtle Problems
Mild memory (RAM) issues can interfere with game installation. We recommend running memory scan utilities such as the Windows Memory Diagnostic. Run the extended test suite option, as mild errors on your memory sticks will often not be uncovered with shorter scans.

Remove Viruses and Spyware
If all else fails, there may be malware on your computer that is interfering with the installation process. To deal with this possibility, we recommend scanning your hard drive with game-friendly security programs such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, Avast!, or Kaspersky.

Verify that the Secondary Logon Service is Enabled
The Secondary Logon service must be enabled for Diablo III to install and run. Depending on your version of Windows, you should be able to navigate to this service with one of the following methods:

- Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
- Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services

If the service is disabled in your Windows, please change it to Automatic. Be advised that some security programs (such as AVG) can potentially be turning this service off. If the service becomes disabled again after you've switched it to automatic, you will need to configure your security program to stop disabling the service.
